Swiss technology firm FinalSpark has launched an innovative program allowing scientists to rent cloud access to biocomputers made from human brain cells, dubbed “Neurospark,” for $500 a month. This initiative aims to provide a highly efficient, cost-effective alternative for AI development using organic materials.

The Details:

  • This technology uses organoids, or small clusters of human brain cells, and aims to make AI development cheaper and more efficient.

  • FinalSpark claims that these biocomputers could be 100,000 times more efficient than traditional silicon-based computers for training AI.

  • Neurospark is the first service to provide access to biocomputers made from human brain cells, which can also be viewed live online.

  • The AI models are trained using techniques adapted for brain cells, with dopamine used for positive reinforcement and electrical signals for negative reinforcement.

  • The organoids used can last up to 100 days, meaning AI training can continue for a few months before the organoids need to be replaced.

Neurospark introduces a groundbreaking approach to AI development by using human brain cells. This could not only reduce the costs and energy used in AI training but also opens up new possibilities for the future of AI, including potentially longer-lived AI systems. This technology could change how AI is developed and maintained in the future.

AI LAWSUIT

The San Francisco City Attorney’s office is taking legal action against 16 AI-powered websites known for creating unauthorized nude images of women and girls. City Attorney David Chiu announced the lawsuit, highlighting that these sites were visited over 200 million times in the first six months of 2024 alone.

The Details:

  • How the Websites Work: Users upload photos of clothed people to these websites, which then use AI to make them appear nude.

  • Legal Issues: The lawsuit accuses these sites of breaking laws against revenge porn, deepfake porn, and child porn, as well as violating fair competition laws by causing more harm than good.

  • What the Lawsuit Aims to Do: The City Attorney wants to shut these websites down for good, stop the operators from making more sites like these, and have them pay civil penalties.

This legal move by the San Francisco City Attorney’s office addresses the serious issue of non-consensual digital exploitation facilitated by AI technology. It aims to halt the operations of websites that harm individuals, especially women and girls, and set a strong precedent against such misuse of AI for creating and spreading deepfake content.

Donald Trump posts a fake AI-generated Taylor Swift endorsement

Donald Trump has shared AI-generated fake images on social media, falsely suggesting that Taylor Swift and her fans are supporting him in the upcoming U.S. election. The images, sourced from right-wing accounts known for misinformation, include a fake headline implying Swift fans turned to Trump after a concert cancellation. Swift, who supported Democrats in 2020 and criticized Trump during his presidency, has not responded to these posts.

AI boom sends data center water use soaring

The AI boom is driving up water consumption in data centers, which use water for cooling. In Virginia, water usage at data centers increased by nearly two-thirds from 2019 to 2023. While some data centers recycle water in closed-loop systems, much of it is lost to evaporation due to the need for humidity control, especially in drier regions. This trend is considered unsustainable, with major operators like Microsoft and Google acknowledging significant water use in areas facing water stress.
