The production company behind Blade Runner 2049, Alcon Entertainment, has filed a lawsuit against Tesla, Elon Musk, and Warner Bros Discovery for allegedly using imagery from the film without permission at Tesla’s robotaxi launch event.
The Details:
Permission Denied: Alcon claims it had specifically refused Warner Bros’ request to use material from Blade Runner 2049 for Tesla’s robotaxi event on 10 October.
Unauthorized Use: Despite the refusal, Alcon alleges that AI-generated imagery based on the movie was used at the event without permission, violating intellectual property rights.
False Endorsement: The lawsuit also accuses the event organisers of suggesting a connection between Alcon and Tesla, misleading audiences about any endorsement.
Financial Impact: Alcon highlighted the “substantial financial magnitude” of the alleged misappropriation, emphasizing the impact on its brand.
This legal action underscores the increasing challenges around intellectual property and AI-generated content, especially as brands incorporate popular media into high-profile events. It also raises concerns about brand misrepresentation and unauthorized endorsements in the business world.
