OpenAI is preparing to launch Orion, its next-generation model, with early access provided to close corporate partners, potentially in December, according to The Verge.

The Details:

  • Exclusive Access: Orion won’t debut widely through ChatGPT; instead, initial access is reserved for select companies to develop custom products.

  • Microsoft Collaboration: Engineers at Microsoft are preparing to host Orion on Azure, with a potential launch as early as November.

  • High Power: Teased as being up to 100x more powerful than GPT-4, Orion may be a step toward OpenAI’s goal of reaching artificial general intelligence (AGI).

  • Training Completion: Orion’s development reportedly involved data from the o1 model, codenamed Strawberry, with final training completed in September.

The upcoming release of Orion marks a pivotal moment for OpenAI as it aims to push the boundaries of AI capabilities and continues its transition into a for-profit structure. This model’s early corporate rollout suggests OpenAI is focused on securing strategic partnerships, potentially setting a new standard for enterprise AI applications.

META

Meta has launched NotebookLlama, an “open” alternative to Google’s NotebookLM, capable of turning text files into podcast-style digests using Meta’s Llama models for processing.

The Details:

  • How It Works: NotebookLlama takes a text file, creates a transcript, adds dramatization, and converts it to audio via open text-to-speech models.

  • Limitations: The robotic quality of the voices and overlapping audio reveal room for improvement, with Meta researchers pointing to text-to-speech models as the primary constraint.

  • Enhancement Ideas: Meta researchers suggest improving naturalness by using multiple agents for more realistic dialogue.

  • Challenges: As with other AI-generated podcasts, NotebookLlama faces hallucination issues, meaning it may inadvertently generate inaccurate information.

NotebookLlama showcases the potential for AI-driven audio content creation but highlights the limitations in making natural-sounding, reliable podcasts. For developers and AI enthusiasts, it’s a peek into Meta’s progress and a chance to explore innovative ways to improve AI audio.
