OPENAI

OpenAI just released GPT-4.1, a new family of models optimized for real-world software engineering tasks. With three versions — GPT-4.1, mini, and nano — the models aim to help developers build better coding agents, faster and cheaper.

The Details:

  • GPT-4.1, 4.1 mini, and 4.1 nano all feature a 1M-token context window (~750,000 words) and are available via API only — not in ChatGPT.

  • OpenAI claims the models outperform GPT-4o and GPT-4o mini on software coding benchmarks like SWE-bench, with 4.1 hitting up to 54.6% accuracy.

  • Pricing starts at $2 per million input tokens for GPT-4.1, with nano being the cheapest at just $0.10 per million input tokens.

  • According to OpenAI, 4.1 is better at following structure, formatting, frontend coding, and consistent tool use — and even leads on video understanding benchmarks.

  • However, accuracy dips with longer input lengths (down to 50% at 1M tokens), and prompts may need to be more explicit due to increased literalness.

Why it matters:

OpenAI is edging closer to its goal of building a full “agentic software engineer.” While GPT-4.1 isn’t flawless, it reflects the race to make LLMs not just smart — but skilled enough to code entire apps from start to finish.

Google DeepMind just introduced DolphinGemma, an AI model trained to understand — and even generate — dolphin vocalizations. Built on its Gemma architecture, the model could be the key to decoding dolphin “language.”

The Details:

  • DolphinGemma was developed using audio data from the Wild Dolphin Project, which studies Atlantic spotted dolphins in their natural habitats.

  • The model is based on Google’s open-source Gemma AI family and is lightweight enough to run on mobile devices, including phones.

  • It can generate synthetic dolphin vocalizations and identify matching responses — essentially enabling a rudimentary “conversation” with dolphins.

  • Researchers at WDP will begin field-testing the model this summer using the upcoming Google Pixel 9, which allows simultaneous sound generation and real-time pattern matching.

  • Previously, WDP used Pixel 6 devices, but the upgraded hardware offers faster processing to support DolphinGemma’s more complex AI tasks.

Why it matters:

This is one of the most fascinating examples of AI being used for cross-species communication. If DolphinGemma helps researchers decode dolphin behavior, it could pave the way for breakthroughs in wildlife research — and maybe even one day, interspecies understanding.

HUGGING FACE

Hugging Face just made a bold move into robotics by acquiring French startup Pollen Robotics — best known for its open-source humanoid robot, Reachy 2.

The Details:

  • Pollen Robotics, founded in 2016, raised €2.5M before being acquired; its mission was to make affordable humanoid robots for homes.

  • Hugging Face plans to sell Reachy 2 and open its code to the developer community for experimentation and upgrades.

  • The two companies previously partnered on “Le Robot,” an open-source bot designed to perform household chores.

  • Hugging Face has quietly built a robotics team led by former Tesla Optimus engineer Remi Cadene to accelerate this new direction.

  • The company aims to make robots as accessible and hackable as AI models — a big bet on open-source robotics.

Why it matters:

AI isn’t just for chatbots anymore. Hugging Face’s expansion into robotics signals a future where developers can fine-tune robots like they fine-tune LLMs. With open-source humanoids, we could soon see the same community-led innovation that made Hugging Face a powerhouse in AI — now applied to physical machines that fold your laundry.
