Microsoft has signed a deal with Constellation Energy to revive the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant in Pennsylvania to power its AI projects and data centers. The plant was the site of the worst nuclear accident in US history.

The Details:

  • Nuclear Revival: The plant, renamed Crane Clean Energy Center, will reopen by 2028, generating 3,400 jobs and adding $16 billion to Pennsylvania’s GDP.

  • Clean Energy Focus: Nuclear energy is seen as a stable, carbon-free solution to the tech sector’s growing energy needs, especially for AI.

  • Economic Impact: The 20-year agreement aims to boost the economy while reducing carbon emissions, with over $3 billion in taxes.

  • Controversy: Local activists question the revival, citing concerns about safety and the choice of nuclear over other sustainable energy sources.

Microsoft’s investment in nuclear energy marks a significant step toward meeting AI’s energy demands. However, the decision to revive Three Mile Island raises debates about nuclear power’s role in a carbon-free future.
