The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has proposed breaking up Google’s monopoly in online search by requiring the company to divest its Chrome browser and potentially Android. This landmark case could reshape the tech landscape.
The Details:
Monopoly Ruling: Judge Amit Mehta ruled Google abused its dominance in search, using Chrome and Android to maintain its monopoly.
Proposed Remedies: DOJ recommends selling Chrome and possibly Android to encourage competition, along with licensing Google’s search and ad-click data to rivals.
Market Restrictions: Google would face bans on re-entering the browser market for five years and restrictions on acquiring competing AI or ad tech.
Google’s Pushback: Google criticized the measures, warning they would harm users, reduce product quality, and undermine its AI competitiveness against OpenAI and Microsoft.
If enforced, these remedies could disrupt Google’s dominance and transform the search and AI industries. This case marks a critical moment for Big Tech regulation, potentially setting a precedent for global competition rules.

Apple is reportedly working on a more conversational Siri powered by large language models (LLMs), aiming to rival competitors like Google and OpenAI in the AI space.
The Details:
Revamped Siri: A fully conversational version of Siri, driven by LLMs, is expected to launch in spring 2026, replacing the current Siri interface.
Advanced Capabilities: The new Siri will combine conversational abilities like OpenAI’s Advanced Voice Mode with access to personal data and apps for a seamless experience.
Third-Party AI Integration: Until the upgrade, Apple will integrate third-party AI tools like ChatGPT into Apple Intelligence, starting in December.
Apple’s move to revamp Siri with LLMs highlights its effort to regain ground in the competitive AI landscape. If successful, the new Siri could set a new standard for voice assistants and elevate Apple’s AI ecosystem.

UK drops out of global top 50 supercomputers
The UK no longer has a supercomputer in the global top 50, with ARCHER2 now ranked 62nd, down from 49th in June and 38th last year. The decline comes after the government canceled plans for an £800 million exascale supercomputer at the University of Edinburgh. Experts warn that without renewed investment, the UK risks falling behind in science and innovation.
