A former Google software engineer is under scrutiny for allegedly attempting to smuggle artificial intelligence technology to a secret recipient in Beijing.

Linwei Ding, who departed Google’s California headquarters, is accused of transferring critical AI insights to a Chinese company. His clandestine operation involved a monthly payout of $14,800, plus undisclosed bonuses. Between May 2022 and 2023, Ding reportedly uploaded 500 files, some containing trade secrets, all while evading detection using a clever cloud-based strategy.

Ding’s grand plan included launching an AI startup, aiming to replicate and enhance Google’s cutting-edge tech. This incident underscores the intense AI race and ongoing concerns about intellectual property theft, impacting U.S.-China relations.
