ANTHROPIC

Anthropic, the company behind the Claude chatbot series, has taken a pioneering step in AI transparency by releasing the system prompts that guide the behavior and tone of its models, including Claude 3 Opus, Claude 3.5 Sonnet, and Claude 3.5 Haiku.

The Details:

  • System Prompts Revealed: Anthropic has shared the instructions used to direct its AI models on what actions to avoid and how to shape their responses. The prompts prohibit opening URLs, identifying humans in images, or starting replies with filler words like “certainly.”

  • Model Updates: The knowledge base for Claude 3.5 Sonnet was updated in April, while Claude 3 Opus and Claude 3.5 Haiku received updates in August 2023. These updates allow the models to use information up to those dates to answer questions.

  • Handling Unknowns: If the models encounter a question they can’t answer with readily available internet information, they are instructed not to apologize but to warn users about the potential for inaccurate responses or “hallucinations.”

Anthropic’s decision to publish its system prompts is unprecedented in the AI field, where companies typically keep such information private for competitive reasons or to prevent misuse through prompt injections. By doing so, Anthropic is positioning itself as a leader in transparency and ethical practices in AI.

Brazil’s Supreme Court has issued a warning to Elon Musk, telling him to appoint a legal representative for his social media company, X, in Brazil within 24 hours. If he doesn’t comply, the court may suspend X’s operations in the country. This is part of a larger battle between Musk and Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who is focused on fighting misinformation.

The Details:

  • Court’s Warning: Justice de Moraes has threatened to shut down X in Brazil unless Musk names a legal representative quickly.

  • Background of Conflict: The tension has been building due to Musk’s refusal to block certain X accounts that spread false information, particularly those supporting false claims about Brazil’s elections by former President Jair Bolsonaro.

  • Musk’s Position: Musk, who advocates for unrestricted free speech, has accused Justice de Moraes of suppressing free speech and overreaching his judicial powers.

  • X’s Potential Shutdown: Earlier, X said it might close its operations in Brazil following threats from de Moraes to arrest its legal representatives if they didn’t follow his orders to remove certain content.

This standoff between Musk and the Brazilian court is important because it deals with issues like free speech, the role of social media in spreading information, and how international companies operate under local laws. The resolution of this conflict could set a precedent for how social media platforms manage government interactions and regulations globally.

AI & TECH NEWS

Meta shuts down AR studio

Meta is shutting down its Spark AR studio on January 14, 2025, discontinuing the tool that allowed developers to create custom AR effects for Instagram and Facebook. This decision, part of Meta’s shift toward AI and mixed media, could push AR creators to other platforms like Snapchat. Many in the AR community are disappointed, as Spark was a vital tool for their work, and its closure will impact both creators and brands that used AR for marketing and engagement.

Google and Meta envy Nvidia's hefty paychecks

Nvidia employees are experiencing immense financial rewards, with some becoming multimillionaires due to the company’s skyrocketing stock value. This has sparked envy among workers at tech giants like Google and Meta, who are frustrated by the slower wealth accumulation in their own companies. Despite Nvidia’s demanding work culture, including long hours and intense pressure, employees endure it for the lucrative stock options that vest over time.

Apple's new iOS beta uses AI to erase objects from photos

Apple’s latest developer betas for iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS 15.1 introduce a new AI-powered feature called “Clean Up,” allowing users to remove objects from photos seamlessly.
