Xockets, a Texas-based startup, has filed a lawsuit against Nvidia and Microsoft, accusing them of using its patented AI chip technology without permission. The company also claims both tech giants worked together to keep prices low on this type of technology.

The Details:

  • Patent Issue: Xockets says Nvidia used its Data Processing Unit (DPU) technology in three products—BlueField, ConnectX, and NVLink Switch—after buying Mellanox in 2020. Xockets claims Mellanox copied their tech after seeing a public demo in 2015.

  • Microsoft’s Involvement: The lawsuit also accuses Microsoft of using Nvidia’s AI servers, which Xockets says are based on their patented technology.

  • Buying Cartel Allegation: Xockets accuses Nvidia and Microsoft of being part of a buyers’ cartel through an organization called RPX. According to Xockets, this group helped big tech companies lower the price of innovations by working together.

  • Ignored Warning: Xockets claims it told Nvidia about the issue in 2022, but the company continued using the technology, following a “copy now, deal with the consequences later” approach.

Xockets is seeking compensation and wants the court to stop Nvidia and Microsoft from using its technology. Despite going up against big players, the startup feels confident about its case and ability to challenge these companies in court.

Elon Musk’s AI startup, xAI, has launched ‘Colossus’, a powerful AI training system equipped with 100,000 Nvidia graphics cards. This system marks a major step in xAI’s mission to compete with industry leaders like OpenAI.

The Details:

  • Colossus is now one of the most powerful AI training systems globally, potentially surpassing the U.S. Energy Department’s Aurora system in performance.

  • The system uses 100,000 Nvidia H100 graphics cards, which are designed to run large AI models up to 30 times faster than previous generations.

  • xAI plans to double the system’s capacity to 200,000 GPUs, including 50,000 of Nvidia’s faster H200 chips, boosting AI model training speed even further.

  • xAI’s current AI model, Grok-2, was trained using 15,000 GPUs. With Colossus, xAI aims to develop more advanced models, with a new version of Grok expected by year’s end.

  • Some of the chips powering Colossus were initially intended for Tesla, but Musk redirected 12,000 Nvidia H100s to xAI for its AI projects.

xAI’s new Colossus system marks a significant step in Musk’s push to develop cutting-edge AI. With plans to scale its capabilities and build even more powerful AI models, xAI is positioning itself as a strong competitor in the AI landscape, ready to challenge industry leaders like OpenAI.

New open-source AI avoids hallucinations

A new open-source AI model called Reflection 70B can review and correct its own answers before delivering a final response. This model is designed to reduce mistakes or “hallucinations” commonly seen in generative AI, by checking for errors and refining its responses for greater accuracy

MI6 and CIA using generative AI to combat tech-driven threat actors

CIA Director Bill Burns and MI6 Chief Richard Moore revealed that their agencies use AI, including generative AI, to enhance intelligence tasks like data analysis and safeguarding operations. They highlighted the Ukraine war’s demonstration of tech’s role in modern conflict and emphasized China as a significant geopolitical challenge. The CIA has tripled its budget to address security threats from China, now accounting for 20% of its total budget.

Amazon lets Audible narrators clone themselves with AI

Amazon is testing AI-generated voice clones for Audible narrators to speed up audiobook production. Narrators will submit voice recordings to create AI replicas, which they can control for future projects. They will earn royalties on a title-by-title basis, but concerns exist about how this could affect job opportunities for human performers.

A study has found that AI tools like ChatGPT are being used to create fake scientific papers, which are then listed on Google Scholar. These AI-generated studies, often hard to distinguish from real ones, are raising concerns about the reliability of online scientific content. The research identified 139 suspicious papers, with many covering important policy-related topics like health and technology.
